Event ROI & Sustainability

• 1. Stand Production

  * Select materials made from recycled materials or that can be reused several times and that, when no longer suitable for stand construction, can be recycled
  * Consider using carpet tiles instead of sheet carpet
  * Think about well designed display panels to convey your message, rather than printing information sheets

• 2. Planning

  * Conduct research, look at other organisations policies and activities and go from there
  * Create your own policy
  * Add to your policy year on year to benchmark your activity

• 4. Hospitality

  * Avoid using disposable cutlery and crockery, use branded re-useable items instead
  * Consider the source of your food and drink, there are many Fair Trade options
  * Sourcing locally not only supports the local industry but reduces carbon emissions from transport

• 3. Construction

  * Stand set up and pack up is known to be the largest generator of waste
  * Recycle all that you can and make sure the rest is dealt with appropriately and not abandoned

• 6. Transport

  * Why not travel as a group instead or make use of the excellent public transport links?

  * Keep printed corporate collateral to a minimum
  * Recycle items you don’t use
  * Make contact via e-mail, this way not only will you be saving money and resources by not printing but you will also collect more quality contacts.

  * Modern systems are both creative and re-useable time and time again

  * Make sure you attend the Events Corner Sustainability seminars
  * Keep up to date with industry trends and standards

• 10. CO₂ Emissions

  * If your journey to EIBMT includes air travel why not offset your carbon emissions? You should be able to do this online with the airline

How to practically implement sustainability at your events

The EventSustainability tool includes measurement check-lists, communication templates and industry best practice advice. You can also generate a report, complete with a direct emissions calculation, which can be given to clients or used as evidence of steps taken towards compliance with industry standards including BS 8901 (future ISO 20121).

The Sustainable Event Measurement Tool (SEMT) allows users to measure and report on a variety of data and event impacts and help to identify areas for cost savings, efficiency improvement and innovation.

The WRAP RMP tool can help you to identify areas where you can reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill, saving you money as well as having a positive environmental impact. You can also view video demonstrations of the tool and see a selection of case studies from users who initially trialled the tool.
